How a Weighted Blanket Helps

recovery Jul 23, 2018

Have you ever been to the dentist and had the experience of having a "lead apron" put on you while x-rays were taken? I remember even as a kid that I really liked that sensation. Years later in my early recovery, I met with occupational therapists who introduced me to weighted blankets. I found that spending 10 or 15 minutes under a weighted blanket soothed me and helped me feel grounded when I was anxious or triggered. Using a weighted blanket really works for me and is part of my Personal Medicine.

Recently my colleague Missy Rufo and her 11-year-old daughter Maddie made a weighted blanket.

Maddie LOVES her new 10-pound weighted blanket.

The scientific evidence on the effectiveness of a weighted blanket to help with anxiety and insomnia is sketchy. But since there are no ill-effects for adults, trying one out may be something to consider.
