New Doors Will Open

Each month we add a new thematic homepage in our RecoveryLibrary.  This month's theme was a series of reflections on the idea that when one door closes, others open. Remember, it was Alexander Graham Bell - inventor of the telephone - who coined the phrase, "When one door closes, another opens."  Less well known is the rest of that senetence: "When one door closes, another opens, but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us."

Being diagnosed with schizophrenia as a young person closed some important doors in my life.  I spent time longing for those closed doors to open again.  I wanted to go back to who I had once been.  But for me and the others featured on this month's homepage, recovery has meant discovering new possibilities.  Recovery was not a matter of going back to who we once were.  It was transformative.

If doors have closed in your life, watch and wait patiently for new doors to begin opening for you.  Sometimes, like grace, a new path begins to form under our feet if only we will take the next step and the next.
