ResearchPatricia E. Deegan PhD specializes in qualitative research methods. She trained under Professor A. Giorgi PhD where she learned the empirical phenomenological method at Duquesne University. Pat has conducted qualitative research on the recovery process and has consulted on wide variety of research projects. Currently Dr. Deegan is conducting a qualitative study of recovery-based approaches to using psychiatric medications through the University of Kansas. Pat’s research interests include ex-patient directed empirical inquiry, qualitative investigations and participatory action research aimed at better understanding the recovery process – what helps and hinders. Pat's current research includes 1. an observational process study and 2. a randomized controlled trial aimed at understanding the impact of a peer run decision support center in a psychiatric medication clinic. The intervention being studied includes a software program to support shared decision making in psychiatry. She is doing this research in association with Charlie Rapp PhD at the University of Kansas, School of Social Welfare. Pat is also keenly interested in collecting oral history and first person accounts of ex-patient perspectives on the history of mental health services. Her work in this area has included collaboration with Vanessa Jackson LCSW, Pemina Yellow Bird and Kristine Medea on the history of African Americans, Native Americans and institutionalized children.
